All it takes is a buffalo and some courage

Those supercomputing guys love to build their massive data centers full of hardware and high-end cooling systems. These data smelters consume vast amounts of energy and take up a ton of space. But they make you feel like a real man or at least a real geek, which is important.

Pocket Synths by James Watt
jw-4.jpg - Pocket Synths by James Watt James Watt, maker of the Solar Thereamin I build a while back, has another really cool project. This time he created 2 pocket synthesizers inspired by the Atari Punk Console and a post on the Voices of Saturn Synth kit. I really hope he turns this into a kit like the solar theremin. [Thanks [...] [..] Read complete article

Build: Kinetic Horse Sculpture
IMG_3575.JPG - Build: Kinetic Horse Sculpture James Watt, the creator of the Solar Theremin, has another great kit that I am going to making for this weeks build. This time it’s a kinetic horse made of paper. The final horse is able to gallop, thanks to a small hidden motor inside. This kit is a fairly easy build, but it [...] [..] Read complete article

Double-wide? How about 220-wide?
Grab a ratty lawnchair and put a case of Busch cans in the cooler because the data center has now officially become the trailer park. Poindexter, meet Jethro. Both Sun and Rackable introduced supercomputers-in-shipping-containers some time ago, but it's a move by Microsoft that pushes the trend into the mainstream. In its mammoth new data center in Chicago, reports Rich Miller, "Microsoft will for [..] Read complete article

Rumor: Microsoft set for vast data-center push
I've received a few more hints about the big cloud-computing initiative Microsoft may be about to announce, perhaps during the company's Mix08 conference in Las Vegas this coming week. One of the cornerstones of the strategy, I've heard, will be an aggressive acceleration of the company's investment in its data center network. The construction program will be "totally over the top," said a person [..] Read complete article

Google and Microsoft have nothing on - drum roll - the SuperNAP
A $350m data center giant in the desert Exclusive $500m. That’s the going rate for a data smelter these days. You know, a facility run by a company such as Google or Microsoft that moves bits around and consumes more power than old-school metal processing plants. TheRegister [..] Read complete article

Heavy metal cloud
I've looked at clouds from both sides now, and they're really freaking expensive. Google's capital expenditures, the lion's share of which go to building and outfitting data centers, soared to a record high of $842 million in the first quarter of this year, up from $678 million in the fourth quarter of '07, notes Data Center Knowledge. Should the company maintain its current pace of investment, it [..] Read complete article

Build: Phenakistoscope
IMG_3914.JPG - Build: Phenakistoscope This week we are going to continue with the “moving picture” theme and build a Phenakistoscope. Luckily for all of us, it’s a lot easier to build than it is to pronounce. Even better, you the first thing you need to do is eat a lollypop! Why? Well, read on. So the big question is, what [...] [..] Read complete article
