 AT&T says that if you bought a current iPhone ($400) after May 27, you can exchange it for a 3G one ($200) for free, Gizmodo reports. Unfortunately the Giz report is a bit fuzzy, and leaves us with several more questions (most important one from our self-interested persepective -- what about folks who bought one in, say, March?) but this makes some sense to us, for three reasons:
- They are both technically $400 phones -- AT&T is simply eating a $200 subsidy on the new ones.
- It's in AT&T's interest to upgrade customers to the 3G phone, because they'll be paying an extra $10 per month in data charges -- r an extra $240 over the life of a two-year contract.
- We don't think this is going to apply to that many people: Has anyone really been able to find an iPhone recently?
