Sure we would love to be wrong on this one but we have to call shenanigans on the latest Nokia-related rumor going around. Yesterday, JAMP published a post recapping a recent comparison of forthcoming 8 megapixel monsters. The Samsung Innov8 and Sony Ericsson C905 are obviously going to be pitted against each other quite a bit in the coming months because they represent two of the first 8 megapixel camera phones that will reach market. In this particular post however, it was also stated that Nokia would be issuing its own entry into the 8 megapixel battle and that said powerhouse would start hitting shelves by December. Mmm. As much as we would love to believe that we just don’t see it happening. Nokia will of course offer an 8 megapixel competitor sometime soon and it will likely be a stunner thanks to Zeiss optics, but will it be released one to two months after Nokia’s new Papa Nseries hits the market? No. The N96 is going to drop at the beginning of Q4 and Nokia will give it the limelight until the 5800, N85 et al come around in early 2009. The only way an 8 megapixel offering would come before next year would be as a numbered handset as opposed to an Nseries and it would likely be seriously lacking in features so as not to cannibalize N96 sales. If that were to be the case we wouldn’t really want it anyway; waiting for an 8 megapixel Nseries is the only way to go. Besides, think about the length of time between announcement and release for Nokia handsets. Take the N96 for example: It was announced back in February and it will start shipping in October, nearly eight months later! The exceptions to the rule, Nokia’s new E71 and E66, broke the mold a bit but how long had we known about them prior to announcement? Right, about seven months. So if you’re hungry for resolution and 5 megapixels just won’t cut it, you’re looking at the Innov8, C905 or maybe some other phone, at least until the end of 1H 2009.
