GADGETS AND GAMES DIRECTORY :: CLIMATE CHANGE
Thoughts From Kansas Blogger

Weblog of a University of Kansas ecology and evolutionary biology student, fighting for progressive politics, evolution, and endangered species.
Thoughts from Kansas You will notice that it lacks definiteness; that it lacks purpose; that it lacks coherence; that it lacks a subject to talk about; that it is loose and wabbly; that it wanders around; that

Tennessee sets the stage for a 21st century Scopes trial
If you wonder why I haven't been blogging lately, it's because I've been trying to keep science safe in the Volunteer State; for instance, here's a great piece Huffington Post science editor Cara Santa Maria put together, including an interview with yours truly. If you watch the NCSE front page (and you should), you'll see that it's almost all-Tennessee, all the time. Tennessee is ge [..] Read complete article

The drama or the soap opera: the future of Deniergate
Shorter David Klinghoffer: National Center for Science Education, Darwin/Climate Enforcers, Humiliated by Forged Document Scandal: Ethical questions about someone with no formal ties to NCSE clearly demonstrates the scientific, pedagogical, and moral failings of NCSE.So Peter Gleick outed himself as the source of the Heartland board documents released last week, a [..] Read complete article

Godwin's Law
Shorter David Klinghoffer, Minister of Propaganda for the Disco. 'tute: "Then They Came for Me -- and There Was No One Left to Speak for Me.": I'm Jewish so it's OK for me to claim NCSE's decision to oppose pseudoscience in earth science classrooms as well as biology classes is just like Nazis dragging people off to be murdered in the middle of the night. NCSE takes on climate change
The National Center for Science Education, where I work, has focused on fighting political attacks on evolution education for all of its 30 year history. When the group was founded in the early '80s, they didn't choose a name narrowly focused on evolution, hoping that they'd make quick work of creationism and then move on to other problems in science education. Today's announcement that NCSE' [..] Read complete article

Dispatch from the Values Voters Summit
Sarah Posner reports from the Values Voters Summit, a gathering of the theocracy-in-waiting. Various GOP presidential candidates spoke, as did Bryan Fischer, of the American Family Association: Fischer followed Romney's speech with an ugly anti-Muslim, anti-gay, anti-liberal speech. Although he did not mention Mormonism, he did emphasize, repeatedly, that the president of the [..] Read complete article

Why science questions matter for candidates
In the last few weeks, and at tonight's Republican debate, lots of national politicians have been asked their views on evolution, and lots of politicians have answered embarrassingly. We should bear in mind, as I pointed out before: Like the Miss USA contestants, most politicians (excluding those on local school boards or state boards of education) will have little opp [..] Read complete article

Evolution and climate change
On twitter, journalist Dave Roberts wrote: Evolution is not a free-floating "theory." It underlies all of modern biology & ecology. Similarly for climate change: it's a foundation.I wrote back: I agree (hence @NCSE's work on both). But AGW is less foundation than integrative and crucial knowledge, built on other foundationsAs NCS [..] Read complete article
