Send to email | Video Site VTap Makes Your iPhone Video Better in PALMGOOG | By Silicon el 31-Mar-2008 | A smart new feature from Web/mobile video site vTap: A free, personalized feed of videos based on, among other things, the stuff you put on your Facebook profile.
What's vTap? One of a handful of sites that aggregates video from all over the Web, including Google's (GOOG) YouTube, Dailymotion, networks like ESPN, CNBC, and CBS, MySpace, Hulu, etc. Unique twist: vTap transcodes video into formats your mobile phone understands. For example, it converts Flash video into H.264 on the fly, so you can watch video on your iPhone that you ordinarily couldn't.
What's the point of today's new feature, a personal video feed? Browsing the Web is tricky on most phones, so it's handy for the site to build a playlist of stuff that it thinks you'll like. And by accessing the stuff you post in your Facebook or MySpace profile, it might, for example, know that you already like Wilco and 'The Office', and queue up some clips.
We installed the vTap app on Facebook, which created a feed of videos for us to watch based on our favorite bands, books, TV shows, movies, etc. Then we used the Facebook app to send our phone a link to the feed. That worked smoothly with our aging Palm (PALM) Treo. After popping vTap open in our phone's browser, we got to watch a goofy video of Ricky Gervais over the air. Slick.
One problem: The feed we created through Facebook didn't seem to get saved to our vTap account. Going back to vTap on our phone later brought the feed back up, but logging into the vTap site from our laptop (on the same account) got us an empty feed. We also noticed the Hulu content wasn't working. And it's a bit tedious sifting through search results on an iPhone we borrowed. But assuming vTap can work out the kinks, we think it's exactly the kind of (free) video that people will want to watch on their phones.
