Seiring meningkatnya popularitas penyimpanan data online (online file storage), banyak para pengguna yang memanfaatkan layanan ini. Keunggulan penyimpanan data online ini adalah sifatnya yang fleksibel, dalam arti kita tidak perlu repot lagi membawa media penyimpanan data dan kapasitasnya yang cukup besar. Sayangnya untuk menyimpan data ke internet apalagi jika data tersebut cukup besar bisa dibayangkan berapa lama waktu yang diperlukan untuk meng-upload data tersebut.
Salah satu penyedia layanan penyimpanan data online yang cukup terkenal adalah Rapidshare (meskipun banyak penggunanya yang meng-upload file-file ilegal). Dimana Rapidshare banyak digunakan untuk membagi file antar sesama pengguna yang cukup dengan hanya satu link URL maka semua pengguna dapat men-downloadnya tanpa harus mengirimkan file tersebut ke tiap-tiap pengguna.
Dengan melihat peluang ini maka pihak Microsoft meluncurkan layanan penyimpanan data online yang diberi nama Windows Live SkyDrive. Layanan yang sebelumnya bernama Windows Live Folders (Anda harus meng-update link posting file, dikarenakan perubahan URL di Windows Live SkyDrive) ini dapat diakses di http://skydrive.live.com/home.aspx. Untuk menggunakan layanan yang masih dalam versi beta ini Anda cukup mengaksesnya dengan account Hotmail/Windows Live Anda.
Beberapa pembaharuan dalam versi beta ini adalah:
* Fitur dan grafik baru
* Kemudahan untuk kembali ke SkyDrive yang sebelumnya Anda kunjungi
* Thumbnail dari file gambar
* Drag and drop file ke SkyDrive Anda
* Kemudahan dalam membagi file dengan embed script dimana saja Anda memposting HTML
Sayangnya Windows Live SkyDrive sampai saat tulisan ini dibuat belum dapat dinikmati oleh para pengguna di Indonesia. Hanya Amerika Serikat, Inggris dan India sajalah yang dapat menggunakan layanan ini.
