Very serious, very respected Aussie consumer magazine Choice ran a little test recently. They plugged a bunch of electronic stuff in, turned them on, then let them run and added up how much each appliance would cost you to power for a year if you left them powered-up. The humble DVD player would run to AUD$34.42. A cordless telephone? AUD$2.87. A PlayStation 3? AUD$260. Egads. The 360's not much better, coming in at AUD$203, while the humble Wii uses a humble AUD$24.58. Sure, nobody ever leaves a console on for 365 days, so these are indicative, but still. They're indicatively reminding you to turn your consoles off when you're not using them.

Fame!
I used to tout every bit of media interest I've gotten, but lately it's hardly seemed worth it. Press outreach is part of my job, so a quote in a newspaper in Florida, or a radio interview in Pennsylvania, doesn't do much for the ego any more. I will note with interest this article at conservative news site CNSnews, relating to anti-science bills that have been introduced in several st [..] Read complete article

Science Education
A teacher at Netroots Nation asks what can be done to improve science education, and to get principles of science as a process back into classes within the NCLB framework. Gore responded briefly that it is "really harmful that science education… [has] been pushed out of the experience our children have in schools in order to teach to a test." Pelosi answered by talking s [..] Read complete article

Science advisor
This summer, I sat in with some big shots to discuss the future of science policy in an Obama Presidency, and of space policy in particular. One of the ideas I pushed, and which received general support, was the importance of a cabinet-level science advisor to the President, one who would be appointed and confirmed quickly, and given maximal access to the President and his decision-making proc [..] Read complete article

Easy does it
A recent edition of Science featured a worrying paper by University of Chicago sociologist James A. Evans titled Electronic Publication and the Narrowing of Science and Scholarship. Seeking to learn more about how research is conducted online, Evans scoured a database of 34 million articles from science journals. He discovered a paradox: as journals begin publishing online, making it easier for re [..] Read complete article

Texas science standards: Disco. plays fast and loose
Texas is gearing up to revise their state science standards. This is a big deal, because the standards Texas sets determine how textbooks are written not just for the Texas market, but for the rest of the nation. The fight over science standards now is a prelude to an imminent and much bigger fight over textbook adoptions. And the Texas Board of Education is currently run by creationist Don [..] Read complete article
